  • Train from Prague to Vienna:  We probably could have stayed in Vienna longer but we were getting a little tired after Prague.  Excellent public transport system.  We were a few kilometres out from the centre but easily got to our accommodation by tram and light rail.  The train station is enormous and if you get off the back of the train you need to walk a fair way to get to the station concourse and sort out transport options on different floors.  We found Vienna a city of very large and imposing buildings and it has been populated since around 500BC.  Being not only the capital of Austria but the former capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the defacto capital of the Holy Roman Empire there are lots of amazing and important historic buildings to discover and lots of churches and cathedrals.  We wandered for a whole day and had intended to do so the following day.  After spending some time in St. Stephens Cathedral which was really wonderful we discovered it was pouring with rain for most of the day.  We then decided to visit the United Nations, a short train ride from the centre.  If you have the time it is an education and such a good example of the multi ethnic background of the organisation and its origins.  Basically a city within a city.  Well worth the visit.  We hope to return to Vienna as there is much more to see in this great city.
  • Train from Vienna to Klagenfurt:  We decided to stay here as it was too long a trip from Vienna straight through to Udine and Venice.  Really nice place to stay and from what we could discover dates back to the late 12th century.  Some really nice buildings and interesting streets with some historical significance.  It is the capital of  Carinthia and has quite a mixed history over the centuries including occupation by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1919.  The Dragon in the main square is a major part of the history dating back according to folklore to the city's inception.  Just a lovely city to stay in for a few nights but unfortunately Lake Wothersee, a major resort area and any worthwhile tourist sites were all but closed down in early October and very hard to get to without a car.
