Start of Our Trip Into Western Greece and The Balkans 2018

  • West Coast of Greece and a Number of Islands:  Fly to Athens Greece to see the Akropolis and then travel through to the West Coast and then island hop.  Get there as early as possible we think it opens about 9am.  We found the Akropolis quite impressive but the only part of it that has had a great deal of restoration seems to be the Amphitheatre mainly we think because they hold a lot of concerts and operas etc. This is a must see of course if you are in Greece as it is in a lot of ways the cradle of civilisation as we know it.  We have been spoilt because of the places we've seen in Turkey.
  • On the bus to Korinthos (Corinth).  Now a rather nice holiday resort.  First we went out to the canal.  The canal cruise is fascinating as you can see the amount of construction work that was undertaken.  Built in the late 19th century it connects the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea to the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea making the peninsula an island.  Then a taxi up to Acrocorinth an ancient fortress occupied from archaic times through to the early 19th century.  Fantastic views from here and an interesting castle but little maintained.  A very mixed history so well worth seeing.
  • Next on the bus to Olympia.  The original site of the Olympic Games founded in the 8th century BC.  Some restoration has been done but to help you on your way there are lots of diagrams posted at the different areas to show you the original constructions.  Get there as early as you can lots of bus groups and very hot in summer.
  • Back on the bus and the ferry to the island of Zakynthos.  We stayed a little way out of the main city area.  This is mainly a holiday resort.  It was a good place to just go out on a cruise boat for the day, swim in the sea and in the caves and just look at the fabulous views around.
  • Next on the ferry to Kefalonia.  Again mainly a holiday resort island but some wonderful views to see.
  • On the ferry to Lefkada and then on the bus to Parga.  A lovely little holiday town on the Ionian Sea.  Great to take a little tour boat out around the sea.  Also the castle is well worth the visit.  Situated above the town it is a bit of a climb but the views are outstanding.  Originally built in the 11th century then destroyed several times and rebuilt again by the Venetians in the 16th century.  It has a great little museum where you can see some of the history.
  • Not many buses so an early start to Igoumenista and then a ferry to Corfu Island.  We stayed in the wrong place here too far from the centre.  Only one day in Corfu Town mainly wandering through The Old Fortress.  Originally a Venetian Fortress built around the 6th century and built on further through the centuries.  Very impressive fortress with lots of ancient and fairly recent history, it sits on a peninsula overlooking the Gulf of Kerkyra and Geritsa Bay.
