Montenegro First Stop Dobra Voda

  • On the bus to Dobra Voda Montenegro.  Purely a coastal holiday resort.  Good for a break but nothing else.
  • We're moving again two buses this time one to Bar and the next to Centinje the old capital of Montenegro.  First afternoon with a friendly taxi driver up in the mountains to the Lovcen National Park and the Njegos's Mauseleum.  A long but very spectacular drive up to the Petar II Petrovic-Nyegos Mauseleum.  Prince Bishop of Montenegro and a poet and philosopher he ruled from 1830 to 1851 and concentrated on uniting tribes and uniting a centralised state.  Read more online.  When you get there it's a long walk of 461 steps to the top but well worth it.  The mauseleum and other buildings are something else to see and the view is just incredible.  Well worth the drive.
  • Next day discovering Centinje. Founded in the 15th century it is a delightful little city with lots of historic buildings and the official residence of the President of Montenegro.  Considered as the historic and second capital it is also very much a cultural centre.  Lots of interesting historic buildings and museums to wander around.
  • Next on the bus to Zabljak and the Tara Mountains.  A short look around and then the next day a small organised trip to Tara Gorge with white water rafting and a fly down on a zipline.  The white water rafting was a great experience and an exciting way to see a fair bit of the Gorge.  The Zipline was another experience all together with a 1.6 klm line and about 600 mtrs. above the Gorge, very scary and invigorating.  The following day we just walked and went through to Durmitor National Park and the Black Lake a glacial lake in the park.  An interesting walk and well worth seeing.  Zabljak is a lovely little town much like any European ski village great to see in the autumn and probably even better if you're a skier in the snow.
  • Onto the next bus to Kotor and the coast.  Very much a holiday resort and a stop off for all the cruise ships.  Also very historic and a lot of the fortifications go back to the Venetian Period.  It was first mentioned during the Ancient Roman Times around 168BC but probably goes back further than that.  It has a very long and mixed history shown by all the ancient fortifications and lots of historic buildings, churches and cathedrals.  We climbed up the 1350 steps through the San Giovanni Castle up to the 280 mtr summit.  It is a walk through ancient history and the view from the top dominates the town with a panoramic view.  Stop and talk to the craftsmen on the way up and become part of the history.  A lovely place to visit.
