Start of Our Trip Into Romania and Further

  • Fly into Bucharest Romania for one night:   We only stayed there for one night as we had seen all we wanted to see of Bucharest in 2018.  An interesting point if you are flying into Bucharest and then travelling by bus or train to other parts consider staying at a hotel near the train station.  There is a direct bus that goes to and from the airport to Bucharest North Train Station and then about another kilometre to the Main Bus Station.  We stayed at the Ibis an old but very well established hotel with good size rooms, clean and with a bar and restaurant with reasonable prices.
  • Now on the Train to Sigisaura Transylvania:  We decided to go back there again after 2018 as it is a magical place but we picked the wrong time as there was a major festival on and we should have booked a hotel a lot earlier.  If  you're going there check any festivals as all the hotels get booked out.  Lots of people there and the festival was a lot of fun but I think we prefer the place in the off season like when we were there in 2018.
  • Next on the Train to Cluj Napoca:  Known as Cluj.  Very historic city founded in 13th century I think, and the unofficial capital of Transylvania.  A university city with lots of nightlife, good restaurants (not too expensive) some beautiful river views and a picturesque old town area.  Easy to get around using the trams but can be a little difficult navigating on foot at first.
  • Now on a Train to Oradea:  I think maybe older than Cluj.  Historic information dates it around the early 12th century but recent archeoligical evidence shows that there may have been continuous occupation since neolithic times.  Again very easy to get around with a great light rail / tram network and then walk around the old centre from place to place.  Oradea Fortress is well worth a visit as its history may go back further than 12th century.  Unfortunately it is a little spoilt by the fact that the area around it has been commercialised with modern buildings and there is not much left of the fortress itself.  There are some beautiful historic buildings including the Black Eagle Palace Shopping Centre at one time a hotel built 1907 to 1908 an absolute wonder and wonderfully preserved.
