Turkey Mediterannean First Stop Antalya  And AcrossThe Centre

  • Next bus to Antalya.  An interesting big city on the Mediterannean coast.  More of a tourist city but still quite a lot of history and interesting historic sites to wander through.  Very picturesque coastline.  It is also a university city with a musical background as well.
  • Onto the next bus to Side.  Beautiful resort town.  We thought we could happily live here.  As you drive into the town you are taken past a major part of its history including city walls and the City Gate .  A lot of historic sites including the Temple of Athena and a large working 2nd century Antique Theatre where we saw a free concert.  A lot of restoration work being done.  The original city we believe was founded by Greek settlers around the 7th century BC.  It has a mixed history including occupation by Alexander the Great, Rome and Pergamum and several others.  Some fairly significant ruins are scattered around the town including on the shoreline.  Very tourist orientated absolutely packed with nic nacs and clothes and jewellery shops of every kind and lots of restaurants and bars.  Just a lovely place to stay.
  • Onto the next bus to Alanya.  We only spent one night here the main aim being to visit the historic Alanya Castle on an escarpment above the town and approached by cable car.   A lot of it quite well kept and preserved and some fantastic views.  A good place to wander around.  Another big holiday resort.
  • Next bus to Anamur.  Our main reason for stopping here was to see the Mamure Castle.  This is a tremendous fortress a few klms out of Anamur.  It was constructed by the Armenians in the 13th century on the same site as a Roman Fortress from the 3rd century.  The rear sits high on the beach with a panoramic view.  It is presently undergoing an extensive restoration but there is even now a lot to see that has already been restored.  We think there is another castle in the other direction but we didn't have time to see that.  Interesting this town and district have numerous hot houses growing bananas and export to Europe and Russia.  Also we were ordered off a beach that has a major Jandarma compound and holiday resort.  Friendly but serious.
  • Back on the bus again to Kizkalesi.  Nice little beachside village holiday resort with two castles (fortresses).   We visited Korykos Castle which has been partially restored on the outside but is in a sad state otherwise.  It stands on a promontory overlooking the sea and the other castle:  Maiden's (Kizkalesi) Castle sits offshore about 200 metres from the shore.  Korykos was built by the Romans and Maiden's in 1104 as a crusader's castle. Both are of interesting historical value and worth seeing.  Search on the net to read more.
  • On the bus to Tarsus next.  Only stayed here one night.  Suleyman the Magnificent stands guard over the city also there is Cleopatra's Gate.  Close by Attaturk on his horse also stands guard over Tarsus.  Probably more to see but we have to keep going.
  • Next stop Goreme Cappadocia.  We loved this place nowhere like it in the world with its cave hotels and volcanic rock formations and houses it is so totally different.  We did a day tour of all the major sites.  There are homes small churches. museums and chapels in these volcanic rock buildings the insides hacked out to contain them.  The following day up early for the Balloons.  A magical experience not to be missed, about six or seven hours of flying over Goreme and the surrounding district just something else.  A completely different view of this wonderful place.  The following day a walking tour of Love Valley.  Slightly outside of Goreme and another different aspect seeing another environment of abandoned farms with the remains of fruit trees and wild grapes and what were gardens and lots more volcanic rock homes.
  • Next on the bus to Kirrikale for one night.  We were only passing through here so not sure if there's anything to see here.
