Rhodes Greece and Pammucale Turkey

  • Marmaris Turkey and then by ferry to the island of Rhodes Greece.  We loved Rhodes and spent 5 nights there.  The main attraction of course is the Rhodes Castle of the Old Town (Crusader Castle).  Originally built around the 7th century as a citadel and 14th century as a palace.  It is a living breathing place of history with homes, shops, museums, churches, bars and restaurants within.  Extremely well preserved and I think kept that way because of the life within it.  We also spent some time at the beach here and hired a car for the day and travelled around the whole island.
  • Back to Marmaris Turkey by ferry and then onto Pamukkale by bus.  A lot of people just travel here for the day and the town suffers with that.  We enjoyed our stay here in a family owned hotel and visiting the historic site of Hieropolis.  A lot of ruins here but also quite a well preserved theatre and the thermal pools are amazing.  Another day out from here with driver and car to Laodicea.  Settlement goes back as far as 5500BC although the Roman periods of construction were around 4th and 5th centuries AD.  An interesting mix of historical buildings and ruins.  A lot of restoration being carried out and this will become a major site.  Onto the next place Afrodisias and the Sanctuary of Afrodite.  Earliest habitation about 5000BC but the major construction of the city and a lot of the sites here from about 1BC through to about 6th century AD and then abandoned around 12th century AD.  Click on the link below.
  • Now we move onto the Mediterranean Coast.
