Turkey First Stop Eceabat Dardanelles

  • Next bus to Turkey landing at Eceabat and the Gallipoli Peninsula. Lovely little coastal town right on the Dardanelles.  This town is one of the main jump off points for the Anzac Day Commemorations every year.  The waterfront memorials had only just been completed with lots of sculptures and a pictorial and map history of the the Gallipoli Campaign.  Just wonderful and very moving.  A very good small group guided tour out to the Gallipoli peninsula seeing all of the areas of conflict and the war graves of the first world war campaign.  Very well done and explained by our guide.  Again very moving and a must to see.  Another day and a small group tour (Same Company Crowded House) to the historic site of Troy.  Very informative and an incredible place to see.  A lot of preservation work being done so you can see some of the old buildings.
  • Onto the next bus to Bergama (Pergamon). A good place to start was the ancient city of Pergamon Akropolis originally fortified around the fifth and fourth centuries BC and continued through to the second century AD and so forth.  We went up there on the cable car that now operates.  Quite an enormous city in its time and quite a lot of restoration is being carried out.  Also tried to visit the Red Basilica but unfortunately it is under some serious restoration at the moment.  An interesting old city to wander around some interesting antique shops and lots of old buildings.  Also went to a festival in September for the 90 year celebration of the return of Bergama to Turkey after the indexation by Italy.
  • Back on the bus again and on to Izmir.   Really enjoyed this big city would visit it again.  Nice waterfront area.  We visited the ancient city of Smyrna which is within Izmir.  A lot of excavations have been done and some restorations.  Around 8,500 years old it was an important city in that area.  A very interesting place to wander around with lots of interesting history to see and read about.  Also a fascinating local market is in the city of Izmir.  Lots of different clothes all kinds of food and delicasies and plenty of other things to see and buy.
  • On the bus again to Selcuk.  Great place to stay and travel to Ephesus one of the most famous ancient sites of Turkey.  We were part of a small group tour and spent some time with an excellent tour guide.  This place is really something quite magnificent.  A lot of preservation work happening and one of the largest Amphitheatres in the world we think.  We went back there that evening to an opera and it was quite something to sit where someone had sat maybe 2000 years ago.  We also spent some time wandering around the Mosque of Isa Bey (14th century) and also the Basilica of St. John (4th. century) and Ayasuluk Inner Castle (6th. century).  These are all on high points overlooking Selcuk.  Quite a lot more historic stuff to see here plus a number of shops, restaurants etc. and a factory making Izmir tiles and ceramics.  Click on the link below.
  • Back on a bus again this time to Marmaris and then by ferry to the island of Rhodes Greece.
